Module content | *Co-ordinated in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development (Only for Extension students and covers first part of ARD 780) Overview of concepts, theories and key definitions of development and rural development, poverty and food security to understand the magnitude and different dimensions of rural development in developing countries; evolution of rural development theories, policies and practices along recent history; the dynamic role of agriculture in the development process at country level and the successive phases of its contribution from early developing stages to industrial economies; smallholder agriculture and development; concepts and dimensions of rural livelihoods as the basis cluster of rural development; farming systems in smallholder agriculture; rural non-farm enterprises; food security and development; institutions and rural development; land tenure systems, property rights and land reform; rural finance and agricultural credit; agricultural markets with some policy and implementation dimensions; local institutions, property rights and collective action in communities; development support interventions. |
